Bundesliga Title Race Analysis

Bundesliga standings after three rounds have an unfamiliar look at the very top: SC Freiburg and Borussia Dortmund are the only unbeaten sides, tied on nine points, while Bayern Munich, usually the pace-setter by this point, sit fourth on seven points after two wins and a draw. FC Augsburg’s start alongside them, also on seven points from three games, is one of the division’s early surprises. Freiburg’s attacking numbers are the standout: ten goals for and just one against across three matches, the best differential in the league so far. RB Leipzig and newly-promoted SV Elversberg both sit on six points, giving Elversberg one of the better starts among this season’s promoted sides. Bayer Leverkusen, Eintracht Frankfurt and Mainz have all taken four points from three games, a slower start than recent seasons for some of the league’s usual top-half regulars. With so few matches played it is far too early to call it an upset in the making, but Bayern chasing rather than leading after three rounds is a genuine change from the recent pattern.
